The first fragment of the Muonionalusta meteorite was discovered in 1906 near the village of Kitkiöjärvi. About forty are known today, some quite large. Other debris was found in the Payara district of Norrbotten County, about 140 kilometers (87 miles) north of the Arctic Circle.

The meteorite was first described in 1910 by Prof. A. G. Högbom, who named it after the nearby site of Muonionalusta on the Muonio River. The Muonionalusta meteorite is probably the oldest known meteorite (4.5653 ± 0.001 billion years old) and marks the first occurrence of stishovite in an iron meteorite.
